Meetings from the Past Week
Here is the "Past Meetings" section for your Busybody newsletter, summarizing local governance activity relevant to the Beltline and its surrounding neighborhoods.
Atlanta City Council - Zoning Committee
February 09, 2026 at 11:00 AM
The committee moved forward with a significant policy change for the Beltline Overlay District, approving an ordinance to prohibit new warehousing, self-storage facilities, and distribution centers. The goal is to protect the area’s walkability and prioritize high-density mixed-use development over industrial storage. For local diners and book lovers, the committee reviewed a Special Use Permit for outdoor dining at 717 Edgewood Avenue SE (Gentle Works / Long Story Books).
Citywide, the committee discussed a proposed mandate for most new buildings to include push-button automatic door activators to improve accessibility. Other items discussed included a new digital billboard in Downtown, several residential subdivisions in Northwest and Southwest Atlanta, and a 248-unit multifamily project on Milton Avenue.
Atlanta City Council - Public Safety & Legal Administration Committee
February 09, 2026 at 01:00 PM
Public safety in the Edgewood Avenue area was a major focus as the committee discussed a 180-day moratorium on new alcohol licenses for the Edgewood Corridor (bounded roughly by Irwin Street, Decatur Street, Boulevard, and Fort Street). This freeze is intended to allow the neighborhood to stabilize following a 2025 mass shooting while a task force implements new safety recommendations. The committee also addressed administrative matters related to 309 N Highland Avenue.
In broader news, the committee reviewed legislation that would classify visible mold in rental units as a "highly hazardous" housing code violation, requiring landlords to conduct inspections within five days of a complaint. They also considered the creation of an open-container entertainment district in South Downtown and approved various legal settlements for vehicle accidents and property damage claims across the city.
Atlanta City Council - City Utilities Committee
February 10, 2026 at 10:00 AM
The committee focused heavily on preparations for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, authorizing $2.06 million for temporary labor to handle increased litter and debris pickup during the event. They also approved $8 million for capital improvement project management and nearly $800,000 for new software to optimize trash collection routes citywide. Other business included a budget increase for levee improvements at a water reclamation center in Northwest Atlanta and a floodplain elevation waiver for a single-family home renovation on Oldfield Road.
Atlanta City Council - Community Development/Human Services Committee
February 10, 2026 at 01:30 PM
Significant changes are coming to how the city manages short-term rentals. The committee discussed creating a dedicated "Office of Short-Term Rentals" and a mandatory registry that would require platforms like Airbnb to verify permits or face $1,000-per-day fines. The committee also moved forward with a $40 million grant agreement for revitalization in the Carey Park area.
Members reviewed several land-use changes for properties in Northwest and Southwest Atlanta, including proposed redesignations for housing projects on Joseph E. Boone Blvd and Milton Avenue. They also discussed the development of an interim fire station on Piedmont Road to serve the area while a permanent Midtown station is rebuilt with affordable housing on top.
Fulton County Schools - Board of Education
February 10, 2026 (Work Session and Pre-Work Session)
The Board held two sessions this week at the FCS North Learning Center. While the sessions served as a "Board Work Session" and "Pre-work Session" to review upcoming business and planning, no specific items or votes related to local neighborhood schools or properties were detailed in the available meeting records.
Atlanta City Council - Transportation Committee
February 11, 2026 at 10:00 AM
Of high interest to Beltline residents, the committee held a discussion regarding the current status of the Eastside Beltline light rail project. Council members are seeking formal explanations from MARTA and Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. following recent decisions to halt the project, signaling ongoing friction over transit priorities.
Additionally, the committee discussed a citywide proposal to increase on-street metered parking fees from $1.00 to $1.75 per half-hour to cover rising enforcement costs. Other items included a $1.2 million grant for railroad crossing safety studies, a street closure to facilitate the expansion of the Atlanta Botanical Garden, and over $60 million in maintenance and renewal contracts for Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
Atlanta City Council - Finance/Executive Committee
February 11, 2026 at 01:30 PM
Financial support for local business districts was a highlight this week, as the committee authorized a $12,000 donation to the Little Five Points Cultural District to support neighborhood revitalization and the Main Street program.
The committee also approved nearly $1 million for "smart" public restrooms to be deployed in high-use areas and $100,000 for street outreach and rehousing services for the homeless. Larger administrative items included aligning city tax penalties with state law and a proposal to annex several residential properties from unincorporated DeKalb County into the City of Atlanta and the Atlanta Public Schools system.
