Permits
Things are staying busy along the Eastside Trail and throughout our neighboring blocks this week. From major renovations at Ponce City Market to some long-awaited refreshes in Inman Park, here is a look at the latest permit activity in the area:
675 Ponce De Leon Ave NE (Ponce City Market): Two major commercial alterations are in the works at PCM, with permits totaling nearly $1.5 million ($900,000 and $581,000). Expect ongoing interior construction as the landmark continues its tenant reshuffling.
309 N Highland Ave NE: The building housing Fritti and various office spaces in Inman Park has a $200,000 permit pending for commercial alterations. This aligns with the ongoing adaptive-reuse project to modernize the facade and expand patio seating.
Ralph McGill Blvd NE: A significant residential renovation is planned for a property on Ralph McGill with an estimated value of $215,297. Residents nearby should prepare for the usual sounds of a major home overhaul.
963 Ponce De Leon Ave NE: The Andrew’s Court apartments are undergoing a fire alarm system upgrade as part of a larger basement-level renovation.
112 Blvd NE: This commercial site in Sweet Auburn has a permit pending for the construction of a new security check-in vestibule and various security system upgrades.
83 Fort St NE: Work is starting on the HVAC systems at this location, including the installation of new exhaust fans and ductwork—likely meaning some crane or roof activity on the corner of Fort and Auburn.
701 Highland Ave NE (Highland Walk Apartments): Multiple permits have been issued for the complex, including a unit-specific HVAC replacement and several other commercial additions and alterations totaling $200,000 across the property.
695 Morgan St NE: An electrical permit was issued for commercial work near Historic Fourth Ward Park, focused on predator-type security or specialized wiring systems.
In addition to these larger projects, there are 13 smaller residential permits active in the area this week—mostly for minor HVAC repairs and small additions—totaling about $45,000 in estimated value.
Road Work
Keeping our streets straight can be a full-time job, but here is what you need to know about the GDOT orange cones popping up around the neighborhood this week. We’ve got several projects actively hitting the pavement and a few more waiting in the wings.
SR 8/US 29 from Monroe Drive to Ponce de Leon Avenue: This project is Under Construction, meaning crews are on-site and you should expect traffic impacts. They are working on bicycle and pedestrian facilities, specifically adding street trees and pedestrian lighting between Monroe and Glen Iris to make our walks a bit more scenic.
SR 42 Connector (EB & WB) from SR 10 to SR 42: Work is currently Under Construction to resurface the roadway. Crews are actively working to improve the low pavement scores here, so keep an eye out for lane closures near the connector.
I-75/I-85 Bridge Preservation (Multi-County): This major project is Under Construction and spans Fulton, DeKalb, and Cobb counties. Crews are on-site replacing bridge joints and painting steel structures. Since this affects the heart of the Downtown Connector near us, expect it to impact your commute if you’re hopping on the interstate.
I-75 at Ralph McGill Blvd & Baker Street: The tunnel lighting project is Under Construction. They are currently swapping out the old HPS lights for energy-efficient LEDs. You’ll likely see crews working around the Ralph McGill overpass area.
SR 42 from Wade Street to the DeKalb County Line: This resurfacing project is Under Construction. Because it spans the Fulton and DeKalb line, it’s a bigger effort to smooth out the road surface. Active work is happening now.
SR 10 from I-75 to Ponce de Leon Avenue: This maintenance and resurfacing project has moved into the Construction Work Program. While active work hasn't started today, it is funded and approved, meaning construction is imminent and starting soon.
SR 42/US 23 from DeKalb Avenue to Austin Avenue: This is currently in the Construction Work Program for scoping. GDOT is looking into narrowing the travel lanes to improve safety in the Inman Park/Little Five Points area. No crews are on-site yet, but the planning is finalized and work is on the horizon.
I-75/I-85 from Baker Highland Connector to Decatur Street: This is also in the Construction Work Program phase for scoping. They are studying a one-mile section of the Downtown Connector near Sweet Auburn. It’s funded and approved, but the heavy machinery hasn't arrived just yet.
I-75 at 4 Locations in Fulton County: More bridge preservation is in the Construction Work Program. This involves polymer overlays and joint replacements. It’s in the final pipeline before crews head out to the sites.
