Let's dive in.

NEWS

404 Day tragedy, transit drama, $100 Beltline rent, and a Krog Street chemical scare

1 person dead, at least 1 other injured in shooting at Piedmont Park following '404 Day' event (April 05, 2026) We don’t normally post about crime around here, but this tragedy in Piedmont Park is the talk of the neighborhood, and for good reason. In addition to the shooting (and not to minimize tragedy), residents in park-adjacent neighborhoods saw bumper-to-bumper traffic throughout the day. Let’s just hope this sparks some serious reflection from the city as we head into World Cup festivities.

One destination, two routes: Atlanta residents debate the future of Beltline transit (April 02, 2026) The great "streetcar vs. light rail vs. just keep walking" debate continues as residents hash out how we'll actually move around the loop. It's a classic Atlanta tug-of-war between transit efficiency and preserving the current vibe we already love—spoiler alert: nobody is agreeing yet.

The Beltline was once falling behind on affordable housing. It's caught up. (April 02, 2026) In a rare bit of housing good news, officials announced they've actually hit nearly 80% of their 2030 goal for affordable units along the trail loop. Some residents are even seeing monthly bills under $100 thanks to these programs, proving the dream of living on the Beltline without selling a kidney might actually stay alive.

From rail line to green lifeline: BeltLine arboretum grows across Atlanta (April 03, 2026) Our favorite concrete trail just got a major green glow-up to celebrate two decades of the Arboretum project. Volunteers and city leaders gathered to mark the milestone of turning old industrial rail lines into a thriving forest that helps us all breathe a little easier during those humid July walks.

Fire officials secure hazardous spill on Krog Street, air quality restored (April 04, 2026) If you saw fire trucks swarming Krog Street this weekend, you weren't imagining the drama—crews were rushed in to contain a chemical hazard near the heart of the district. Thankfully, the air is clear now, so you can go back to your regularly scheduled market snacking without needing a hazmat suit.

Walk the Line: What makes you "So ATL?" (April 03, 2026) With 404 Day in the books, neighbors hit the Beltline this week to share exactly what gives them that "So ATL" badge of honor. From lemon pepper wings to knowing exactly which shortcut avoids the Connector traffic, the consensus is clear: there's nowhere else quite like our backyard.

BUSINESS

Pints and pits: Three Taverns brings BBQ and brews to Ponce City Market

Three Taverns Brewery - opening - Your Eastside Trail walks just got a lot more spirited now that this large-scale brewery, distillery, and BBQ pitstop is open at Ponce City Market. It's perfectly perched for people-watching with a pint in hand, and honestly, the smell of that barbecue alone is going to make it impossible to just "walk on by" during your afternoon stroll.

GOVERNMENT

Sparkly jails, bus cameras, and a $600k budget for those pesky potholes

Note: it’s an unusually quiet week as many governing bodies take spring break; if you’re new here, you can see what this section usually looks like in prior issues

Past Week Roundup

Atlanta Board of Education
School officials are kicking off a busy season of construction and campus upgrades. The board gave the green light to a 10-year lease for the fields at Howard Middle School, ensuring Inter Atlanta Football Club has a home for the next decade. A major wave of renovations is coming to multiple district sites through new design-build contracts, covering everything from HVAC upgrades to kitchen modernizations. The board also approved a total replacement of the Metropolitan Transportation System, and new camera systems will be installed district-wide to beef up safety for students riding the bus. To help with staffing shortages, the board approved an "Appreciation Stipend" to encourage employees to stay with the district. A shared parking agreement was also authorized to support campus accessibility.

Fulton County Board of Commissioners
Public safety and infrastructure dominated the county's agenda this week. Commissioners authorized over $7 million for essential maintenance and "clinical grade" cleaning at the county jail to improve sanitary conditions. On the neighborhood front, you might see more crews out soon — the board added $600,000 to the budget for road paving and patching through 2026. Social services got a boost with nearly $1 million allocated to support domestic violence survivors. The board also approved a lease renewal for a senior center serving county residents. On the political side, the board set qualifying fees for the special election to fill the vacant District 4 seat, though a controversial proposal to fund public education for voter IDs failed to pass after a split vote.

CONSTRUCTION

O4W apartment re-dos, electric bus charging, and heavy equipment moving in

Permits
- 504 Pkwy Dr NE — Units 1-4 are getting a "complete unit renovation." Someone is refreshing the finishes and floorings, so expect to see some contractor vans blocking the curb for a bit.
- 497 Blvd Pl NE — More O4W apartment love! This 6-unit building is going through a full interior overhaul. It's nice to see these older units getting some TLC.
- 83 Fort St NE — Sweet Auburn is going green. A new bus charging station and electrical service are coming to the corner. Future-proofing the neighborhood, one charge at a time.
- Ponce City Market — Just some "backstage" work at Ponce City Market. Suite 4000 is getting 20 new data cables and a conference room upgrade. Sounds like a very techy office is moving in.
- 619 Ponce De Leon Ave NE — Inside that gorgeous new mass timber building, they're putting up walls for storage and ADA-compliant fitting rooms. It looks like a new retail tenant is finally getting their space ready for us.
- 356 Blvd NE — Heads up, neighbors: this paved lot is being leased for a "Temporary Construction Staging Area." Translation: heavy machinery and loud beeping are moving in next door for a while.
- 300 Chamberlain St SE — We've got a temporary power system permit for the job site. This usually means the heavy-duty construction phase is kicking off for the McAuley Station project.
- 200 Renaissance Pkwy NE — Structural frame and concrete repairs are on the docket for this building. Expect some scaffolding and the lovely sound of jackhammers while they tighten things up.

Road Work

Under Construction
- SR 8 / Ponce de Leon Avenue (SR 3 to Moreland Ave) — This is the big one for our neighborhood. GDOT is resurfacing the entire stretch of Ponce from Northside Drive all the way to Moreland. Expect some lane shifts and slower rolls between Ponce City Market and the Clermont as they work to fix those notorious potholes.
- I-75/I-85 Resurfacing (CSX to Brookwood Interchange) — The Downtown Connector is under the knife. Crews are resurfacing the main artery from the CSX tracks up through the Brookwood split. It's been years since this stretch was paved, so while the smoother ride will be a gift, the overnight lane closures are definitely a headache.
- SR 154 / Memorial Drive (Fulton & DeKalb Counties) — Big changes are happening on the edge of Cabbagetown and Reynoldstown. This project spans both counties to add a new mid-block pedestrian crossing and restricted U-turn (RCUT) between Hill Street and Pearl Street. It's a "heads up" for anyone walking to the Beltline or driving the Memorial corridor.
- SR 42 / Moreland Avenue @ Arkwright Place — Construction is active at this intersection to convert it into a "right-in/right-out" only. They are building a median to stop all left turns, so if this is your usual shortcut into Edgewood or Reynoldstown, you'll need to rethink your route.
- I-75 @ Ralph McGill Blvd & Baker Street — If you use the McGill or Baker exits to get into O4W, watch for crews in the tunnels. They're swapping out those dim yellow lights for energy-efficient LEDs. It'll make the tunnels a lot less "creepy" at night, but watch for intermittent lane closures.
- I-75 Lighting (I-85 to Memorial Drive) — More light is coming to the Connector. This project is replacing poles and wiring to bring LED fixtures to the stretch between the split and Memorial Drive. Expect shoulder work and occasional bucket trucks near the Sweet Auburn exits.
- I-20 Lighting (Capitol Ave to Flat Shoals Rd - Fulton & DeKalb Counties) — Spanning the county line, this project is bringing new LED lighting to the south side of our area. If you're heading toward East Atlanta or the southern tip of the Beltline via I-20, be mindful of crews working on the conduit and poles through the corridor.

Construction Work Program
- SR 10 (Freedom Parkway) from I-75 to Ponce De Leon Ave — Get ready for a smoother ride. This short stretch is slated for resurfacing and maintenance, which should fix some of those pesky bumps between the Connector and the edge of O4W.
- SR 42/US 23 (Moreland Ave) from DeKalb Ave to Austin Ave (DeKalb County) — Heads up, Inman Park and Poncey-Highland: GDOT is scoping out a plan to narrow travel lanes to 10 feet. It's all about slowing things down and making the corridor feel a little less like a highway and more like a neighborhood street.
- I-75/I-85 FM Baker Highland Connector to Decatur St — This scoping project is looking at the Downtown Connector right where it hugs Sweet Auburn and O4W. It's just in the study phase for now, but any movement on the Connector usually means big ripple effects for our local side streets.
- I-75/I-85 Capping (The Stitch - Phase I) — The dream of a park over the highway is getting closer. This phase focuses on the pedestrian bridge elements. It's a significant project that will eventually sew Downtown and the O4W area back together.
- SR 8 (Ponce De Leon Ave) from Peachtree St to Ponce De Leon Place — Expect some median work along this iconic stretch. It's part of a "Vulnerable Road User" safety initiative, so they're looking to make the trek between Midtown and Ponce City Market a bit safer for those not in a car.
- SR 8/US 23 at SR 42 (Ponce & Moreland Intersection) (Fulton & DeKalb Counties) — This project spans both counties and aims to fix the awkward dance at the Ponce and Moreland/Briarcliff intersection. They're planning to extend the westbound left-turn lane and add a new westbound right-turn lane to help clear the bottleneck near the Plaza Theatre.
- SR 154 (Memorial Drive) from Connally St to Grant St — Big wins for the walkers! This project is all about expanding sidewalks and upgrading ADA ramps to fix the broken and missing links on the edge of Sweet Auburn and Summerhill.
- I-75 Bridge Preservation (4 locations in Fulton County) — This is high-level maintenance (painting, joint replacement, and cleaning) on bridges over the interstate. While the work is on the highway, expect potential lane closures that could back up traffic onto our local neighborhood exits.

Service Requests
- Potholes — Spotted on N Ave NE, Freedom Pkwy & Ponce de Leon Ave, and at Highland Ave & Glen Iris Dr. Keep those eyes peeled unless you're looking for an excuse to buy new tires.
- Traffic Signal Repairs — Glitches reported at Ralph McGill Blvd & Central Park Pl, Piedmont Ave & Currier St, and the intersection of Blvd & Edgewood Ave. Get ready for some "no, you go" hand-waving while these get sorted out.
- Right of Way Maintenance — Litter removal on Pine St NE and some much-needed overgrowth trimming on Seminole Ave NE. We're all for the "urban jungle" aesthetic, but let's keep it tidy.
