The postponement gives city officials and neighbors more time to discuss the project before any binding decisions are made.

DeKalb finds more mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus
DeKalb Public Health reported mosquito surveillance traps in Brookhaven's 30319 ZIP code and North Decatur tested positive for West Nile virus, bringing the countywide total to 10 infected traps this year. No human cases have been reported in the county so far, and officials are urging residents to eliminate standing water and use insect repellent.

DeKalb School Board to approve ESPLOST overpayment plan

Commercial zoning requests were on the table for a Fifth Third Bank branch, a Paramount CBS Atlanta project, and Brookhaven Family Dentistry, alongside a residential setback variance and two dumpster placement variances for local businesses. The council also considered awarding a construction contract to Reeves Young, LLC for the Nancy Creek and Savoy Trail project, which would move forward new pedestrian and bike connections. Also on the agenda was Task Order 2 for the Peachtree Boulevard Gateway and Realignment project, aimed at improving traffic flow along that corridor. Council members additionally weighed renewing a tree-maintenance agreement with Trees Atlanta, joining the Mayor's Monarch Pledge for pollinator habitat, and piggybacking on an existing contract for stormwater drainage cleaning.

DeKalb County Board of Commissioners
The Committee of the Whole moved a batch of big-ticket infrastructure and health items forward to the full board on September 10. Commissioners advanced a $17.88 million GEFA loan to fund the Shoal Creek Trunk Sewer Improvement Project, along with a $4.1 million design contract to extend the Michelle Obama Trail and a $3.2 million contract for new sidewalks along Flat Shoals Parkway. They also advanced nearly $1 million to design a replacement for the North Druid Hills Road bridge at CSX. On the health side, the county moved forward $2.9 million in combined contracts to expand mobile, in-home, and preventive healthcare for uninsured and underinsured residents. Rounding things out, commissioners advanced a 40-week compost pilot program for 500 households, a funding boost for facilities painting and pressure-washing, and a resolution to rename the police department's East Precinct after former Chief Eddie Moody.

City of Brookhaven
Brookhaven had a busy week between its city council, arts commission, and a mayoral town hall. As covered in today's news section, the council voted to defer the intergovernmental agreement for a new fire station at Blackburn Park by 30 days after residents pushed back over notification concerns. The council also approved applying for 2026 GDOT paving grant funding to support street resurfacing citywide, amended the intergovernmental 911 dispatch agreement with the Chattahoochee River 911 Authority, and passed budget transfers within the FY 2026 general fund. Separately, the city's Arts and Culture Commission had a meeting on its calendar to discuss the “Cows are Coming to Brookhaven” public art project, a proposed mural along North Druid Hills, removal of the 2023 Dashboard art exhibit on the Peachtree Creek Greenway, and the 2027 arts work plan, though that meeting was later canceled. - Ashford-Dunwoody Road EB Ramp at I-285 — Construction is adding a third lane to the eastbound Ashford-Dunwoody Road ramp connecting to I-285 northbound, aimed at easing congestion at that interchange.
