Atlanta City Council

The council's Zoning Committee approved a 180-day freeze on new subdivisions of three or more lots in District 8, unanimously advanced a substitute draft of the city's sweeping zoning code rewrite (though the final ordinance stays held until next week), and backed landmark status for southwest Atlanta's historic “Just Us” neighborhood. At the Public Safety & Legal Administration Committee, members approved a $40 million expansion of Axon's police body and fleet camera contract, signed off on phased fire inspection fee hikes, and held the proposed $68 million sale of the Atlanta City Detention Center to Fulton County for further review. The Finance/Executive Committee recommended refunding bonds for the BeltLine, cleared a no-cost hosting agreement for the 2028 Olympic Torch Relay, and pushed forward tens of millions in HVAC, electrical, and design contracts. Minutes aren't posted yet for the Transportation Committee or City Utilities Committee, but their agendas show a nine-member push for a full 22-mile BeltLine light rail loop, $7 million in grants for the Southside Trail, a $71 million Plane Train car purchase, a $1.28 billion cap on the Concourse D airport expansion, and a proposed ban on data centers using drinking water for cooling. Together these items touch everything from your property taxes and water bills to how you'll get around the city for years to come. The zoning rewrite and data center water rules in particular could reshape development rules citywide once they come back up for a vote next week.

Fulton County Board of Commissioners

Commissioners approved a proposed 2026 General Fund millage rate of 8.87 mills, which sets up required public hearings before your property tax bill gets finalized. They also approved county grant funding to help build a 54-unit affordable housing project in English Avenue and passed a resolution urging state lawmakers to ban over-the-counter sales of synthetic kratom while requiring natural kratom to sit behind pharmacy counters. A push to encourage community gardens and local food resilience failed after two commissioners declined to vote, and the board tabled contentious proposals to overhaul the county Ethics Board and to limit public comment strictly to agenda items. Commissioners renewed county employee health benefits while specifically excluding Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield plans, and approved nearly $2.8 million in fuel contracts to keep the county fleet running.

Atlanta Board of Education

The board's Budget Commission opened early discussions on the district's financial outlook, reviewing FY 2027 revenue projections and getting a first look at FY 2028 funding priorities, though no votes or spending decisions came out of it. A separate Policy Review Committee session dug into proposed Policy IFBI, which would govern how teachers use artificial intelligence tools in classrooms, but that discussion also ended without a formal vote. The full board then held a Special Called Meeting where all nine members showed up mainly to enter a closed executive session, leaving no public votes on contracts, budget items, or policy changes. None of this affects your kids' classrooms yet, but keep an eye on the AI policy and the FY 2028 budget priorities since both will likely come back for real votes soon.

- 3519 Roxboro Rd NE — Land disturbance permit filed for six new 4-story residential townhomes, plus new utility work. Expect construction noise and equipment traffic in the area as this one gets underway.
- 1750 Peachtree St NW — Demolition permit filed for the existing building on the site. This is a teardown, so expect noise and heavy trucks once work starts. Worth watching what gets built in its place.
- 1968 Peachtree Rd NW — Three separate commercial alteration permits are moving through review here. One covers a new pharmacy conference room and offices, another renovates the 6th floor into a 10-bed patient care area, and a third reworks the 6th floor storage and support space. This looks like a larger hospital or medical facility expansion happening in phases.
- 1228 W Paces Ferry Rd NW — Interior buildout accepted for a new tenant in a 1,573 square foot retail suite. A new business is on its way in.
- 3400 Around Lenox Rd NE — Tenant improvement permit routed for review on the second level, covering new partitions, doors, fixtures, and finishes. Another sign of retail or office space turning over near Lenox.
- 3655 Roswell Rd NE — HVAC work issued, including new ductwork and equipment relocation. Routine but signals active commercial buildout.
- 575 Morosgo Dr NE — HVAC permit pending for new air handling units and terminal unit relocation, tied to a larger commercial fit-out near Lindbergh.
- 3517 Dumbarton Rd NW — Accepted permit for a home addition and kitchen remodel, including a new primary suite. Expect some construction activity on this residential block.

Road Work

- I-75 from Musket Ridge Drive to I-85, Lighting — Crews are swapping out old HPS lighting for energy-efficient LED fixtures along this corridor, with pole and conduit replacement also on the table.
- SR 400 at Justin C Martin Building, Tunnel Bridge Rehab — This project covers tunnel rehab work including spall repair on transfer beams and roof slabs, plus fire system repairs and upgrades.
- SR 9 from SR 3 to north of Paces Ferry Rd — GDOT is resurfacing this stretch of SR 9 to fix a low pavement condition score.

- Overgrowth and Visibility Issues — Five reports flagging blocked sightlines and overgrown right-of-way at Peachtree Hills Ave & Peachtree Rd (two reports), Bohler Rd NW, Andrews Dr & Paces Ferry Rd, and Northside Pkwy & Howell Mill Rd. Four are already marked solved.
- Sign Repairs and Installations — Three requests for new or fixed signage at Andrews Dr & Paces Ferry Pl, Oak Valley Rd & Peachtree Rd, and Northside Dr & Arden Rd, all still in progress.
- Downed Trees — Three reports on Normandy Dr NW and Roswell Rd NE. Two are closed, one remains open.
