Past Week Roundup

The Atlanta Public Schools board was active across three committee sessions on April 16, focusing heavily on financial transparency and student support. The Audit Committee approved the appointment of Board Vice-Chair Dr. Ken Zeff as its new Chair, placing him at the helm of the district’s financial watchdog group. During the session, officials reviewed a specific audit of student extracurricular activities—including sports and clubs—to ensure those funds are reaching the intended programs. Meanwhile, the Budget Commission discussed the framework for the Fiscal Year 2027 budget. While final spending is not yet set, the commission reviewed staff compensation recommendations and federal funding updates, both of which will ultimately dictate whether the district needs to adjust local property tax rates. On the policy front, the board advanced a revised Counseling and Advisement Policy and updated financial rules for the Board Office, both of which are set for a final vote in May. Members also debated potential changes to high school graduation requirements, including mandatory community service hours, though no final decisions were made.

The Fulton County Board of Commissioners convened for its second regular meeting of the month on April 15. As official minutes have not yet been finalized for this session, the following items were scheduled for consideration on the agenda; note that items on a public agenda may be tabled, deferred, or amended during the meeting. The most significant proposal is a resolution to authorize up to $1.36 billion in revenue bonds for massive improvements and renovations to the Fulton County Jail. This represents a major infrastructure commitment intended to address long-standing facility issues. Also on the agenda is a plan to expand paid parental leave for county employees from eight weeks to 12 weeks, a move aimed at improving staff retention. For local residents concerned with housing and social services, the board is slated to consider a grant for a new 120-unit affordable housing development and $150,000 in funding for senior programming, including computer classes and meal services. A proposal to fund the Summer Youth Internship Program is also up for a vote, alongside several infrastructure agreements regarding stormwater maintenance for new residential and commercial developments.

Meetings This Week
- Atlanta City Council — Committee on Council — April 20, 2026 at 11:30 AM
The committee is scheduled to consider a proposal to allow city committees to fill board seats that have been vacant for more than 60 days and will review a resolution for an independent investigation into specific city contracts. Members will also discuss a Charter amendment requiring a "primary sponsor of record" for all legislation and appoint representatives to the FY 2027 Budget Commission.

- Atlanta City Council — April 20, 2026 at 1:00 PM
Council members will vote on a $1.04 billion widening project for Concourse D at Hartsfield-Jackson and a proposal to create a temporary downtown "entertainment district" with waived alcohol ordinances for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The agenda also includes the formal introduction of the FY 2027 city budget and property tax rates, alongside a new master plan for Beltline Subarea 8. Development items include a proposed annexation and rezoning for apartments at 1150-1220 Woodland Avenue NE and a 14-acre mixed-use project at 1215 Sylvan Road SW and 984 Cox Avenue SW.

Northside school upgrades, a major high-rise repair, and I-75 lighting work

Permits

- 3376 Peachtree Rd NE — Extensive maintenance and water leakage repairs have been permitted for this high-rise following a property condition investigation. It’s a major "keeping the lights on" (and the water out) project for one of the Village’s dense residential blocks.
- 3423 Piedmont Rd NE — Georgia Power is installing new electrical infrastructure here. These utility upgrades are often the "early warning" signal for increased density or future expansion in the surrounding commercial corridor.
- 3475 Piedmont Rd NE — A win for local office occupancy: an existing business suite is expanding its footprint into a neighboring vacant suite, requiring minor interior demolition and build-out.
- 140 Chastain Park Ave NW — Major fire safety upgrade. Two new fire sprinkler systems are being installed to bring the existing building up to current codes.
- 3424 Peachtree Rd — New HVAC units and ductwork are being installed. In Buckhead’s high-rise district, these permits often coincide with crane activity for rooftop unit placement.
