Good morning, Midtown! Spring is officially springing in the city, and this week we've got the first look at our neighborhood's new 4-acre park plus your ultimate guide to Dogwood Fest. Unfortunately though, we have to break our “no crime, and try to stay positive” rule and talk about the tragic Piedmont Park 404 day shooting. Pull up a chair (or a picnic blanket) and let's dive into everything happening in our neck of the woods.

- News — 404 Day shooting, a sudden school closure and the first look at our new 4-acre park.
- Business — A local arts pillar is hunting for a new home while we say a bittersweet goodbye to a Midtown education staple.
- Events — It's Dogwood Festival weekend in Piedmont Park, but we've also got wine nights at MODA and "The Sound of Music" at the Fox to keep you busy.
- Government — Your commute might get smoother thanks to $600k in pothole funding, and local school buses are getting a high-tech safety upgrade.
- Construction — Peachtree Street is getting a serious facelift and the "Stitch" park project is moving forward, but watch out for the "clanging" metal plates on 12th.

Let's dive in.

NEWS

404 Day, Midtown's new backyard, a school closure shock, and Norfolk stays put.

1 person dead, at least 1 other injured in shooting at Piedmont Park following '404 Day' event (April 05, 2026) We don’t normally post about crime around here, but this tragedy in Piedmont Park is the talk of the neighborhood, and for good reason. In addition to the shooting (and not to minimize tragedy), residents in park-adjacent neighborhoods saw bumper-to-bumper traffic throughout the day. Let’s just hope this sparks some serious reflection from the city as we head into World Cup festivities.

Atlanta private school announces sudden closure, citing financial problems (April 01, 2026) Midtown International School completely blindsided families this week by announcing it's shutting its doors for good due to major money troubles. Other local schools are already stepping up to help displaced students find a new home, but for parents who just had their kids' world flipped upside down mid-semester, "stressful" is a significant understatement.

Design of Midtown's new 4-acre park nears unveiling (April 01, 2026) The Midtown Alliance is finally pulling back the curtain on draft renderings for our new 4-acre park during their annual meeting on April 14. We've been waiting for more green space to balance out all the new high-rises, and if the early buzz is any indication, it's going to be the neighborhood's new favorite backyard.

Norfolk Southern renews Midtown Atlanta headquarters lease (April 03, 2026) The rail giant isn't going anywhere, extending its lease and keeping its large headquarters right here in the heart of Midtown. It's a huge sigh of relief for the local economy—and for every coffee shop and lunch spot that relies on those thousands of employees to keep the lights on.

A Midtown church weighs its future after historic hall lands on 'peril' list (April 03, 2026) A historic hall at one of our local churches was just added to a "peril" list, forcing the congregation to make some tough calls about preservation versus progress. It's the classic Midtown dilemma: how do we keep the soul and architecture of the neighborhood intact while the world around it keeps changing at light speed?

Fulton County Announces Early Voting Locations for May 19 Primary (April 01, 2026) Get those calendars out because the list of early voting spots for the upcoming May primary is now live. There are plenty of locations within striking distance for Midtowners, so there's really no excuse to miss out on snagging that "I Voted" sticker early.

BUSINESS

A theater on the move, a school says goodbye, and shifting stages.

Synchronicity Theatre - relocating - After 12 years of bringing the drama (the good kind!) to Peachtree Street, this Midtown arts pillar is on the hunt for a new home. We're crossing our fingers they stay in the neighborhood—One Midtown Plaza just won't feel the same without them. (April 03, 2026)

Midtown International School - closing - It's a tough goodbye for the families and faculty at this local education staple, which is sadly shutting its doors this Friday. It's a bittersweet end for a school that's been such a big part of our community's daily rhythm. (April 02, 2026)

GOVERNMENT

Bus cams, soccer field wins, and $600k for the 'Atlanta slalom'.

Note: it’s an unusually quiet week as many governing bodies take spring break; if you’re new here, you can see what this section usually looks like in prior issues

Past Week Roundup

Atlanta Public Schools
The Board of Education kicked off a significant wave of infrastructure improvements and safety upgrades this week. Most notably for local families and youth athletes, the board greenlit a 10-year lease agreement for the fields at Howard Middle School with the Inter Atlanta Football Club, ensuring long-term use and maintenance for soccer and community play. On the safety front, every yellow bus in the district's fleet will soon be equipped with a new camera system designed to monitor student activity and catch traffic violators who blow past bus stops. The board also signaled a major construction push by awarding design-build contracts for five different school sites, approved a full replacement of the Metropolitan Transportation System facility, and greenlit upgrades to school kitchens and HVAC systems across the district. A shared parking agreement was also approved to help ease access at select campuses. Beyond the bricks and mortar, officials approved a one-time "Appreciation Stipend" for staff, a move aimed at boosting morale and keeping teachers in Atlanta classrooms amidst a competitive hiring market.

Fulton County Board of Commissioners
Public safety and basic services dominated the discussion this week, as commissioners approved more than $7 million for maintenance and "clinical grade cleaning" at county jail facilities to address ongoing sanitary and safety concerns. For those tired of the "Atlanta slalom" around potholes, the board authorized an additional $600,000 for neighborhood road paving and patching through 2026. Social services also saw a boost with nearly $1 million allocated to support domestic violence survivors through the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation. The board also approved a lease renewal for a county senior center, keeping those services in place for residents who depend on them. However, the meeting wasn't without friction; a proposal to fund public education on how to obtain voter identification failed to pass after a split vote, reflecting ongoing political tension within the board. Finally, the county cleared the way for a special election to fill the vacant District 4 seat, setting the qualifying fees for candidates looking to join the commission.

Meetings This Week
- Atlanta NPU — NPU-E, April 07, 2026 at 6:30 PM
This meeting covers a city-wide proposal to ban new self-storage facilities along the Beltline and the 2026 summer event schedule for Piedmont Park, including plans for a FIFA World Cup Watch Party. Members will also review business license applications and development updates for 98 14th Street, 955 Spring Street NW, 1000 Spring Street NE, and 659 Peachtree Street NE.

CONSTRUCTION

Fox Theatre sparks, a massive kitchen hood, and Peachtree's facelift.

Permits
- 660 Peachtree St NE — The Fox Theatre is doing some electrical "mainstage tie-in" work. No new circuits, just making sure the show goes on with plenty of power.
- Peachtree St NE — A 14-foot kitchen hood and fire suppression system are being installed at an undisclosed address on the main drag. That is a serious kitchen setup; I'll be sniffing around for what kind of food is coming.
- 950 W Peachtree St NW — More restaurant movement! They are shuffling outlets and light fixtures in an existing space to get the layout just right.
- 715 Peachtree St NE — The building owner is finishing out a "speculative suite" to lure in a new office tenant. It's a bold move in this office market, so let's hope they snag someone cool.
- 1150 Spring St NW — A major refresh is happening here with a double-header of plumbing and HVAC permits for new fixtures and terminal units.
- Residential Midtown — Two homes are slated for demolition this week. If you live nearby, expect some dust and the "soothing" sounds of a wrecking ball.
- Midtown-wide — Our canopy is getting a trim. 17 permits were issued for "dead, dying, or hazardous" trees, so keep an eye out for crews and falling limbs.

Road Work

Under Construction
- SR 9 / Peachtree St (Fulton County) — Our neighborhood's main spine is getting some serious TLC. Crews are out resurfacing Peachtree from Northside Drive all the way up past Paces Ferry to fix those bumpy stretches. It's going to be a much smoother ride once they're done, but expect some lane closures during off-hours.
- SR 8 / Ponce de Leon Ave (Fulton County) — The stretch of Ponce between Northside Drive and Briarcliff (SR 42) is under construction for resurfacing. This is a major east-west connector for us, so definitely give yourself a little extra time when heading toward the Highlands or Ponce City Market.
- SR 3 / Northside Drive at 14th St & Hemphill Ave (Fulton County) — This messy intersection cluster is finally getting an "operational improvement." They're simplifying the signal layout to help the flow of traffic near the edge of the Tech campus, which should hopefully end some of the 14th Street gridlock once finished.
- SR 13 / Buford Spring Connector (Fulton County) — If you use the "Old 85" to get around, heads up: resurfacing is underway from Peachtree Street up to North Fork Peachtree Creek. It hasn't been paved since 2012, so the "low OCI score" fix is long overdue.
- I-75/I-85 Downtown Connector Lighting (Fulton County) — You might notice crews working on the lighting systems between the I-85 split and Memorial Drive. They're swapping out old HPS bulbs for energy-efficient LEDs, including the tunnels at Ralph McGill Blvd and Baker Street. Expect some late-night lane shifts while they brighten things up.
- Buford Spring Connector Tunnel Lighting (Fulton County) — Similar to the Connector project, the tunnel lighting where SR 13 meets I-85 is getting an LED upgrade. It'll make the merge much clearer at night, but watch out for maintenance crews in the tunnel area.
- Regional Bridge Preservation (Fulton, DeKalb, & Cobb Counties) — This is a big multi-county project hitting seven different spots, including the Moreland Ave (US 23) bridge. They're doing everything from painting steel beams to replacing bridge joints, so be mindful if your commute takes you toward the DeKalb side of town.

Construction Work Program
- Peachtree Street (North Ave to West Peachtree) — Midtown's main drag is getting a makeover with new 10-foot travel lanes in each direction. It's a short 0.3-mile stretch, but since it's the heart of the neighborhood, expect some "where do I go?" energy once the orange cones arrive.
- SR 13 at Monroe Drive — This is a big one for the Ansley Park and Piedmont Park crowd. GDOT is planning to convert this tricky intersection into a multilane hybrid roundabout to fix the constant bottleneck where the Buford Spring Connector meets Monroe.
- SR 9 & 14th Street (Howell Mill Rd to West Peachtree St) — Heads up, commuters: a total "road transformation" is coming to 14th. This realignment is going to be a major factor for anyone moving between the heart of Midtown and the Westside.
- I-75/I-85 Capping (The Stitch - Phase I) — The dream of a large park over the highway is moving closer to reality. Phase I involves pedestrian bridge work that'll eventually help knit our southern border back together with Downtown.
- SR 8 (Peachtree St to Ponce De Leon Place) — Median work is coming to the edge of the neighborhood. Ponce is already a gauntlet, so keep this on your radar for your weekend trips to the BeltLine or PCM.
- SR 3/Northside Drive (Marietta St to 8th St) — This project will realign Northside to provide two solid lanes in each direction with improved intersections. If you use the 8th Street "back way" to get to West Midtown, this will definitely change your Monday morning flow.
- Atlanta Traffic Signal Enhancement (Phase I) — GDOT is upgrading signals at intersections along the "High Injury Network." Expect to see crews installing those heavy-duty mast arms at our busiest intersections to help keep everyone (especially pedestrians) a bit safer.
- Williams Street (I-85 SB Ramp to North Avenue) — This is currently a scoping study for the Downtown Connector, but it's worth watching. They are looking at the 0.28-mile stretch right where the highway dumps into Midtown to see how to better manage that congestion.
- I-75/I-85 Interstate Operational Analysis (Fulton, Clayton, Cobb, & DeKalb Counties) — This one spans four counties and focuses on the big picture. They're digging into the data to figure out how to keep the Connector moving, which is a win for anyone who has ever been stuck in the Midtown crawl.

Service Requests
- Traffic Signal Repairs — Crews are out looking at the lights at 10th St, 16th & Peachtree, 14th & Peachtree, 3rd & Peachtree, 12th & Piedmont, and 14th & Williams. Keep those eyes peeled and your blinkers ready.
- Potholes — Spotted at 4th & Peachtree, 8th & Vedado, 17th & Peachtree, Juniper St, and Monroe Dr. Your suspension's worst nightmare is currently haunting these intersections.
- Loose Metal Plates — Clanging away on 12th St and W Peachtree St. The unintended soundtrack of Atlanta construction.
- Sign Repairs — New or fixed signs are in the works for Park Ln and the corner of 14th & Juniper. Hopefully, this helps everyone actually find where they're going.
- Downed Trees — Reported on Peachtree Cir and Greenwood Ave. Mother Nature had some thoughts this week, and the cleanup is underway.
- Illegal Dumping & Litter — Trash trouble on 8th St and at the corner of Penn & Ponce. Let's keep it classy, Midtown—the sidewalk is not a dumpster.
