Council extends the self-storage moratorium and backs a $6.5M 911 upgrade
Note: our information comes from posted meetings documents (agendas and minutes when available) β latest source document hyperlinked to each meeting.
Past Week Roundup
The Zoning Committee voted unanimously to extend the self-storage moratorium by 60 days for Office-Institutional districts, and it went to the full council on Nov. 2. The committee also recommended denial of a major site plan expansion for a planned housing development and filed a permit for a 21-acre commercial park-for-hire facility, which effectively ends it. The Finance/Executive Committee unanimously backed the 2027 property tax rates and sent them to the full council. It also approved $1.1 million over three years for a youth development grant program, while holding a $3.33 million tree planting contract with Trees Atlanta for more information. The City Utilities Committee recommended more than $64 million in water and infrastructure spending, including $25 million to rehabilitate the water distribution system, and it held a proposed ban on septic tanks for new commercial development. The Transportation Committee advanced $36.84 million for fire safety upgrades on an airport concourse but held a $2.88 million street resurfacing contract. The Public Safety & Legal Administration Committee approved a $6.5 million AT&T contract to upgrade the city's 911 network, and the Community Development/Human Services Committee took up more than $24 million in federal housing grants, though its minutes aren't yet published, so outcomes there aren't confirmed. On Monday, Nov. 2, the Committee on Council approved Dr. Annette Hall's appointment to the Human Relations Commission and held both a rewrite of the council's public comment and proclamation rules and a charter change that would require a councilmember sponsor on all legislation. The full council met that afternoon with the FY 2027 property tax rates, the self-storage moratorium extension and the water and sewer spending on its agenda, but results haven't been posted yet.
The Student Advisory Council held a general body meeting on October 28 at the Center for Learning and Leadership. The agenda covered student support efforts under the banner "We Are Caring for Every Child," plus a discussion on using data to guide financial investments. Council members also planned their standing committees. No votes, budget actions, or contracts came out of the session, and the record shows no minutes. You don't need to act on anything from this one, but it gives you a look at how students are shaping district priorities. The Board of Education met Monday, Nov. 2, with first reads of proposed fall 2027 attendance zones for more than a dozen west and southwest Atlanta schools, including Douglass and Washington high schools, along with the board's draft 2027 legislative priorities. Its consent agenda included temporary construction easements for the city and a school bus purchase. Minutes aren't posted yet.

A 182-sprinkler overhaul on Peachtree, SR 8 resurfacing, and I-75 LED lighting upgrades
Permits
- 1100 Peachtree St NE, Commercial fire sprinkler permit is routed for review. Crews will add or relocate 182 sprinkler heads in a renovated space, which points to a sizable interior overhaul.

They cover new plumbing fixtures (a toilet, a urinal, a lavatory sink and a mop sink), electrical work in Suites 105 and 175, a fire alarm modification, and new HVAC ductwork and grills. Expect steady contractor activity at this address.
- 1170 Peachtree St NE, A commercial alteration permit is accepted for a second-generation buildout in a vacant suite. An existing tenant is expanding in this multi-story office building, and that's a good sign for demand in the area.

- 1438 W Peachtree St NW, Two commercial alteration permits are routed for review. Both cover interior work on an occupied business office suite, including a Level II alteration with a reconfigured layout.
