Atlanta City Council

Council committees packed the week with big-ticket items. The Finance/Executive Committee advanced BeltLine refunding bonds, a no-cost hosting deal for the 2028 Olympic Torch Relay, and millions in HVAC, electrical and architectural contracts, while holding a $68 million proposal to sell the Atlanta City Detention Center to Fulton County. The Public Safety & Legal Administration Committee approved a $40 million expansion of police body and fleet cameras, signed off on phased fire inspection fee hikes, and paid out a $600,000 legal settlement, but also held that same detention center sale for further review. The Zoning Committee approved a 180-day moratorium on new subdivisions of three or more lots in Council District 8, moved a rewritten citywide zoning code forward for more discussion, and backed landmark status for southwest Atlanta's historic "Just Us" neighborhood. Minutes aren't yet posted for the Transportation Committee or City Utilities Committee, but their agendas show the council taking up $7 million in grants for the BeltLine Southside Trail, a resolution backing a full 22-mile BeltLine light rail loop, a $71.3 million Plane Train car purchase, and a ban on data centers using drinking water for cooling. The Community Development/Human Services Committee also met, though its minutes weren't available for review this week.

Fulton County Board of Commissioners

Commissioners set the proposed 2026 General Fund millage rate at 8.87 mills, a move that kicks off required public hearings before your property tax bill gets finalized. The board approved county grant funding toward a 54-unit affordable housing project in English Avenue and passed a resolution pushing state lawmakers to restrict kratom sales, requiring natural kratom to sit behind pharmacy counters and banning synthetic versions outright. A proposal encouraging community gardens and local food resilience failed after two commissioners declined to vote. The board also tabled a contentious plan to abolish the county's citizen-led Ethics Board in favor of an outside hearing officer, along with a separate proposal to limit public comment strictly to agenda items, meaning both fights will resurface at a future meeting.

Atlanta Public Schools Board of Education

The APS Budget Commission held early briefings on the district's finances, reviewing Fiscal Year 2027 revenue and reserve figures alongside a first look at Fiscal Year 2028 funding priorities, but took no binding votes on spending or tax rates. A separate Policy Review Committee discussed proposed Policy IFBI, which would govern how artificial intelligence gets used in classroom instruction, though the committee reached no final decision on the language. The full board also held a Special Called Meeting that consisted almost entirely of a closed executive session, with no public votes on contracts, budget items or school policy. If you're tracking how APS handles AI in the classroom or next year's budget, expect more concrete decisions in the weeks ahead rather than this week.

- 1301 Peachtree St NE — Multi-family interior renovation refinishing hardwoods and swapping in new cabinetry and countertops. A residential refresh, not new construction.
- 675 W Peachtree St NE and 1230 Peachtree St NE — Both buildings are relocating fire sprinklers to meet NFPA 13 code. Routine life-safety work, already issued.
- 811 Peachtree St NE — Same sprinkler relocation story, also issued.
- 1360 Peachtree St NE and 1275 Peachtree St NE — Plumbing permits for new sinks, water heaters, and fixtures. Nothing dramatic, just building upkeep.

Road Work

Under Construction
- SR 8 & SR 8 WE From SR 3 to SR 42 — GDOT crews are resurfacing SR 8 to fix the road's low condition score. Fulton County.
- Buford Spring Connector @ I-85, Tunnel Lighting — Crews are swapping the tunnel's old HPS lighting for energy-efficient LED fixtures. The work may also include new conduit and wiring. Fulton County.
- I-75 from I-85 to Memorial Drive — GDOT is upgrading lighting along this corridor from HPS to LED, with possible pole, conduit, and wiring replacement. Fulton County.
- SR 9 from SR 3 to North of Paces Ferry Rd & SR 9 SO from SR 9 to SR 9 — This is a resurfacing project addressing SR 9's low condition score. Fulton County.
- I-75 @ Ralph McGill Blvd & @ Baker Street, Tunnel Lighting — Crews are replacing tunnel lighting at both locations with energy-efficient LED fixtures, with possible conduit and wiring work included. Fulton County.

Service Requests
- Traffic Signal Repairs — 9 non-emergency reports at Peachtree St & 7th St, Peachtree St & 6th St, Spring St NW, and several other intersections, plus 4 emergency-level repairs at Piedmont Ave & Ponce de Leon Ave, Juniper St & 5th St, Juniper St & 10th St, and 12th St & Peachtree St. All 4 emergency repairs are closed, and most of the non-emergency ones are already in progress.
- Potholes — Reported on 12th St NE, Spring St NW, and 14th Pl NE. One's been fixed, one's in progress, and one got kicked over to the Sewer Division.
- Right of Way Maintenance — Overgrowth blocking visibility at Monroe Dr & 8th St and litter piling up at 5th St & Juniper St. Both are in progress.
- Downed Tree — Cleared on Piedmont Ave NE.
