Midtown
Hey Midtown! Good news: the Atlanta Dogwood Festival is officially returning to Piedmont Park in 2027 despite its recent struggles. While that's worth celebrating, the more immediate story is a sinkhole that's been making life complicated on Midtown streets, plus a groundbreaking on Monroe Drive that's been a long time coming. Lots to dig into this week.
- News — The Dogwood Festival locks in its 2027 comeback, Monroe Drive finally breaks ground on safety improvements, and a sinkhole caused by a broken storm drain forced major detours this week.
- Business — A heartfelt new coffee-and-skate shop is now open, Juicy Crab is eyeing the old Taco Mac space, and a Danish bakery chain is making moves toward a Midtown location.
- Events — The Magnolia Run 5K takes over Piedmont Park on Sunday, and the week is packed with poetry, yoga, live music, and a pasta collaboration dinner worth knowing about.
- Government — No meetings to report, as City Council is on summer recess.
- Construction — Interior buildouts are underway at 999 and 1230 Peachtree, GDOT is reworking the busy Northside-14th-Hemphill intersection cluster, and thirteen traffic signal repair requests landed across Midtown in just three days.
Let's dive in.

CONSTRUCTION
Interior buildouts at 999 and 1230 Peachtree, plus GDOT reworks the Northside-14th-Hemphill intersection
Permits
- 999 Peachtree St NE — New plumbing and fixtures going in. Permit is pending, so keep an eye on this one for what's moving in next.
- 1230 Peachtree St NE — Interior alterations filed for a vacant office suite. Someone has plans for this space.
- 75 14th St NE — Demo work permitted in this multifamily building. Non-original wall paneling, ceilings, and partitions from a previous tenant are coming out. Expect some interior noise while that work happens.
- 1072 W Peachtree St NE — Fire sprinkler work continuing across floors 10 through 60 of this high-rise. This is part of an already-approved project, so no surprises here, just ongoing work.
- 10 10th St NE — Sprinkler system updated to meet current code requirements.
- 675 W Peachtree St NE — Sprinkler heads added and relocated to code. Two permits filed for this address.
- 1375 Peachtree St NE — Fire sprinkler system updated to NFPA 13 2022 standards.
- 1021 Peachtree St NE — Gas line being run for a commercial tenant.
On the residential side, six HVAC replacements, three arborist permits for dead or hazardous trees, one plumbing job, and one interior alteration round out the week. Routine stuff.
Road Work
Under Construction
- SR 3/US 41 Operational Improvements (Fulton County) GDOT is reworking the intersection cluster at Northside Drive, 14th Street, and Hemphill Avenue to simplify signal timing and give drivers more flexibility through the area.
- SR 13 Resurfacing (Fulton County) This stretch of SR 13 from SR 9 to North Fork Peachtree Creek is getting repaved. The road hasn't been resurfaced since 2012, so the work is overdue.
- SR 8 Resurfacing (Fulton County) GDOT is resurfacing SR 8 between SR 3 and SR 42 to bring the road's condition score back up. It's a shorter stretch, just one mile, but plan for possible delays if it's part of your daily route.
- Bridge Preservation Work (Cobb, DeKalb, and Fulton Counties) This multi-county project covers bridge maintenance at seven locations, including sites in Fulton County. Work includes overlay coating, steel beam painting, and joint replacement.
Service Requests
- Traffic Signal Repairs — Reports came in at Peachtree St & 11th St, Juniper St & 10th St, 15th St & Piedmont Ave, 14th St & Spring St, Spring St NW & 10th St, and several other intersections across the area. Thirteen reports total filed between July 20 and 23.
- Potholes — Nine reports filed between July 20 and 24, with the heaviest concentration on 8th St NE (four reports). Monroe Dr NE, 10th St NE at Argonne, Juniper St NE, and 13th St NE round out the list.
