BUSYBODY NORTH DECATUR

Hey, North Decatur — there's a lot moving this week, and the story you'll want to read first is the one about DeKalb Schools putting school closures back on the agenda. If you have kids in the district — or care about property values and neighborhood identity — this conversation is coming whether we're ready or not. Also worth your attention: a cluster of road and bridge projects in pre-construction that will eventually reshape some of the area's most congested corridors.
- News — DeKalb Schools is rebooting its school closure discussion and an interim superintendent is calling the district at a "critical juncture" — families in North Decatur should be paying close attention.
- Events — A candidate forum for HD-90 and SD-44 lands Tuesday, Joan Shelley plays Eddie's Attic that same night, and the weekend brings Hidden Gardens of Sagamore Hills, a plant sale, and plenty of Mother's Day options.
- Government — The DeKalb Planning Commission meets Tuesday to take up a 214-home development, a new "Chronic Nuisance" ordinance, and a drive-through permit on North Druid Hills Road — all worth watching.
- Construction — A $750K commercial overhaul on Lawrenceville Highway led this week's permits, and bridge preservation work is now active at six DeKalb sites — at least one is likely touching your commute.

NEWS
DeKalb Schools eyes closures again, plus three new fire stations coming
Interim superintendent: DeKalb County Schools at a 'critical juncture'
The words "critical juncture" from a school district's top official aren't ones to scroll past. DeKalb's interim superintendent has flagged significant enrollment shifts and facility challenges that will force the board to make hard choices about where resources go — and where they don't. Families in the Brookhaven and Chamblee clusters especially should be paying close attention.
DeKalb Schools Plans to Reboot School Closure Discussion
If you thought the school closure conversation was dead, think again — DeKalb Schools is bringing it back to the table. This is exactly the kind of decision that reshapes neighborhoods, redraws attendance zones, and sends ripples through local property values and community identity for years to come.
DeKalb County to Construct Three New Fire Stations
DeKalb County is moving forward with plans to build three new fire stations as the county's residential growth continues to outpace its emergency infrastructure. Faster response times aren't just a statistic — they're the difference that matters most when something goes wrong at 2 a.m.
Tucker City Council Navigates Budget Shortfall in 2026-2027 Planning
Tucker's city council is wrestling with a shrinking budget heading into the next fiscal year, forcing some uncomfortable conversations about what gets funded and what gets deferred. For residents in Northlake and Briarlake, those tradeoffs could show up as potholes that linger or services that quietly disappear.
Early Voting Begins for Georgia Primary Elections
Early voting is open now ahead of Georgia's May 19 primary, and DeKalb County has polling sites ready so you don't have to gamble on Election Day lines. There's no good reason to wait — go vote.

$142M loan keeps DeKalb funded, but data center rules and $52M sewer fix punted
Note: our information comes from posted meetings documents (agendas and minutes when available) — latest source document hyperlinked to each meeting.
Past Week Roundup
The Board of Commissioners met April 28 and made one of its largest financial moves of the year, authorizing a $142.3 million loan through Tax Anticipation Notes to keep county government funded through 2026 — a routine but essential fiscal action. Commissioners also approved a countywide plan to support unhoused residents and directed $10,000 to a Tucker church running a cold-weather shelter and shower ministry. On the development side, a $250,000 contract was approved to update the Kensington Livable Centers Initiative master plan, which shapes future growth and walkability near the Kensington MARTA station. However, several closely watched items were punted to May 12: proposed regulations on data centers (including a requirement for health and environmental assessments before permits are issued), a potential ban on pet shop sales of dogs, cats, and rabbits, a new blasting ordinance, and more than $52 million in emergency upgrades to the Snapfinger Wastewater Treatment Facility. Note that the Committee of the Whole and PECS Committee also met April 28, but no agenda documents or minutes are available for those sessions, so outcomes from those meetings are not yet known.
The DeKalb School Board had a busy week, holding both a two-day strategic retreat (April 28–29) and a Policy Committee meeting (April 30). At the retreat, the board dug into the framework for the School Year 2027 budget — public hearings are expected as the district moves toward a final vote on how taxpayer dollars get allocated — and advanced a plan to expand Advanced Placement and Carnegie courses in middle and high schools to improve college readiness across the county. The board also discussed a "Disconnect to Reconnect" initiative aimed at reducing digital distractions and improving student wellness, and received an update on the district's literacy plan, which remains a top priority. At the April 30 Policy Committee meeting, members reviewed a brand-new draft policy governing how students and staff can use artificial intelligence tools, moved an updated Internet Acceptable Use policy forward, and began early discussions on a new "Safe Space" policy — all of which are now positioned for a future Board vote, expected to return at the May 28 committee meeting.
Meetings This Week
- DeKalb County School District — Board of Education — Monday, May 4, 2026. The board will receive a status update on the countywide Student Assignment Project, the process that will eventually lead to redrawn school attendance boundaries across DeKalb. Officials will also hold joint sessions with county commissioners on shared facility use, student safety coordination, and aligning high school vocational programs with local workforce needs.
- DeKalb County Board of Commissioners — Committee of the Whole — Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at 9:00 AM. No agenda is currently available for this meeting.
- DeKalb County Board of Commissioners — PWI-Public Works & Infrastructure Committee — Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at 3:30 PM. No agenda is currently available for this meeting.
- DeKalb County Board of Commissioners — Planning Commission — Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at 6:00 PM, via Zoom. A full public hearing agenda is on tap, including a long-deferred proposal to build 214 single-family homes at 8277 Norris Lake Way, a proposed countywide "Chronic Nuisance" ordinance that would create penalties for repeat-offender properties, and a drive-through permit request for a new business at 2960 North Druid Hills Road. Also on the agenda: three permits for a QuikTrip expansion on Memorial Drive, a text amendment clarifying excise taxes on short-term rentals, and several rezoning requests across the county.
CONSTRUCTION
A $750K commercial overhaul on Lawrenceville Hwy, plus bridge work across six DeKalb sites
Permits
- 2484 Briarcliff Rd, Ste 24 — $225K interior renovation underway on a 1,712 sq ft commercial space. Something new is taking shape inside — worth watching to see what opens up.
- Northlake Ct — $265K in fire, smoke, and water damage repairs to an existing townhome. Significant work: full drywall, framing, and interior finishes being replaced.
- 2050 Lawrenceville Hwy — $750K permitted for a unit change-out, described as "like for like." That's a substantial sum for a straight swap — suggests a large-scale mechanical or equipment overhaul at a commercial property.
- 2240 Lawrenceville Hwy — Commercial sewer connection work filed, tying into an existing manhole. Utility work that often signals a space being prepped for a new tenant or use.
- Sagamore Hills Dr — $120K residential addition: kitchen, family room expansion, and a new covered porch. One of the larger home improvement projects on the books this week.
- Briarmoor Rd — $123K accessory structure permit covering renovations to an existing structure plus a new three-car garage and master suite addition.
Beyond the headliners, 35 additional residential and minor permits came through — mostly single-family work, a handful of apartment permits, and two deck/porch projects — totaling roughly $317K in estimated value.
Road Work
Under Construction
- SR-236 Left Turn Lane Extension at SR-155 (DeKalb County) — Turn lane work is underway at the intersection of SR-236 eastbound and SR-155. Expect delays navigating this intersection and give yourself extra time if this crossing is part of your regular route.
- SR-10 / SR-13 / SR-410 Bridge Preservation — 6 Locations in DeKalb County — A multi-site bridge preservation project is active across six DeKalb locations along these corridors. Work includes polymer overlay, repainting of bridge superstructures, deck repairs, joint replacements, header repairs, anchor bolt tightening, and vegetation removal. With six locations in play simultaneously, there's a good chance at least one of these spots touches your commute — check signage carefully and watch for lane shifts near bridge crossings on these routes.
Pre-Construction
- SR-236 Resurfacing (DeKalb County) — The stretch of SR-236 from the Fulton County line to I-285 is slated for resurfacing to address a low pavement condition score. Less than a mile of road, but a well-traveled one — expect lane restrictions when work eventually begins.
- SR-8/US-29 Resurfacing (DeKalb–Gwinnett) — A longer resurfacing run along US-29 spanning from the Fulton County line all the way to the Gwinnett County line. This multi-county corridor sees heavy daily use, so the work will be worth tracking.
- North Druid Hills Road @ US-78 — Signal & Widening (DeKalb County) — A cluster of improvements planned at the US-78/SR-410 westbound exit ramp at North Druid Hills Road. Work includes a new traffic signal at the off-ramp and widened eastbound lanes on North Druid Hills Road. If you use this exit regularly, this should meaningfully improve the flow once complete.
- North Druid Hills Road Bridge @ CSX Railroad (DeKalb County) — Bridge work planned along a 2,600-foot corridor on North Druid Hills Road between Spring Creek Drive and Willivee Drive. Railroad crossing projects tend to come with significant lane and access disruptions — worth keeping an eye on the timeline.
- SR-410/US-78 @ North Druid Hills Road — Lane Extension (DeKalb County) — A companion project to the signal work above: the existing eastbound shared through/right-turn lane on North Druid Hills Road will be extended roughly 245 feet, along with drainage work on the south side. Small improvement, real impact at a notoriously congested spot.
- Clairmont Road (SR-155) Corridor — Operational Improvements (DeKalb County) — About 1.5 miles of Clairmont Road between the I-85 northbound exit ramp and LaVista Road is in line for operational upgrades. Details on the specific improvements are still limited, but this is a high-traffic stretch that connects directly into the neighborhood.
- SR-155 @ North Druid Hills Road — Sidewalk & Shared-Use Path (DeKalb County) — Updated as recently as May 2025, this project would add a shared-use path along the south side of North Druid Hills Road and a 6-foot sidewalk along the north side, near the SR-155 intersection and Azalea Circle. Good news for pedestrians and cyclists in the area.
- SR-155/SR-236 Intersection Restriping (DeKalb County) — A simpler fix: restriping at the intersection of Clairmont Road and LaVista Road. Quick work, but expect some short-term lane confusion while it's happening.
- I-285 Bridge Preservation — 4 Locations in DeKalb County — Maintenance work on four I-285 bridges in DeKalb, including polymer overlay, repainting, joint replacement, and general structural upkeep. Not glamorous, but necessary — and bridge work on 285 almost always means weekend closures when it gets going.
