Capitol View gets a microbrewery, and a 40-mile Flint Riverway gains momentum
Atlanta City Council approves plans for microbrewery in Capitol View community
The Zoning Committee unanimously approved an application from Fun Ventures, LLC, doing business as Khonso Brewing, for a microbrewery and taproom on Dill Avenue, with a letter of support from the Capitol View Neighborhood Association. Councilmembers added microbrewery as an allowable use for permitting applications, and the next step is review by the Zoning Review Board.
Westside Future Fund receives $1 million for Atlanta housing, financial education
The Huntington Bank Community Foundation's $1 million commitment will fund down payment assistance, rental assistance, an anti-displacement tax fund and financial literacy counseling, and it targets households earning less than 80% of area median family income. The gift continues support previously established by Cadence Bank, which merged with Huntington earlier this year.
Ambitious, 40-mile 'Flint Riverway' concept builds momentum
The Atlanta Regional Commission held three "Flint Week" events this month, including a river cleanup in Jonesboro and block parties in Hapeville and Jonesboro, for a trail concept that would branch off the Beltline near the Lee + White district. ARC plans public engagement and studies through the end of 2027 covering South Fulton, Clayton, Fayette and Spalding counties, with a goal of board adoption of plans in the first half of 2028 after the concept lost federal funding last year.
Beltline reveals 5 options for connecting trail, transit to MARTA rail
Of seven alternatives studied for a proposed MARTA infill station at Murphy Crossing, two were eliminated as unfeasible, leaving five; all must address a 60-foot vertical gap between future Beltline transit and MARTA rail and clear freight tracks by at least 23 and a half feet. The scoping study is expected to cost around $800,000 or $900,000 from Tax Allocation District funds, with a locally preferred alternative targeted by next summer at the latest.

Past Week Roundup
Atlanta City Council
The Zoning Committee voted 6-0 to extend the self-storage moratorium by 60 days for Office-Institutional districts, and it recommended denial of a major site plan expansion for a five-acre housing development and filed a 21-acre park-for-hire permit request. Over at the Finance/Executive Committee, members unanimously backed the Fiscal Year 2027 property tax rates and $1.1 million over three years for the Urban League's youth development grants. They also sent the BeltLine refunding bond terms to the full council without a recommendation, and they held a $3.33 million tree planting contract with Trees Atlanta and a proposed annexation. The Utilities Committee recommended more than $64 million in water and infrastructure work, including $25 million for water distribution upgrades, and it held a proposed ban on septic tanks for new commercial buildings. The Transportation Committee recommended $36.84 million for fire safety upgrades on an airport concourse, approved a pedestrian safety agreement with the state for Martin Luther King Jr. Drive at West Lake Avenue, and held a $2.88 million street resurfacing contract. At the Public Safety & Legal Administration Committee, members approved a $6.5 million AT&T contract to upgrade the city's 911 network, and they held a proposal to rein in anonymous housing code complaints. The Community Development/Human Services Committee took up a plan to reserve 50% of available BeltLine tax allocation funds for projects between Murphys Crossing and Blandtown, plus $24 million in federal housing grants. Since minutes for that meeting aren't published yet, outcomes there aren't known. On Monday, Nov. 2, the Committee on Council approved Dr. Annette Hall's appointment to the Human Relations Commission and held both a rewrite of the council's public comment and proclamation rules and a charter change that would require a councilmember sponsor on all legislation. The full council met that afternoon with the FY 2027 property tax rates, the self-storage moratorium extension, land bank transfers for affordable housing and the water and sewer spending on its agenda, but results haven't been posted yet.
Atlanta Public Schools
The Student Advisory Council held a general body meeting on October 28 at the Center for Learning and Leadership. The agenda included discussion of student support efforts, using data to guide financial investments, and planning for the council's standing committees. No minutes were recorded, so there's no public record of what was said. The council is an advisory group, so it didn't vote on budgets, contracts, or district policy, and you won't see changes to your school's operations from this session. The Board of Education met Monday, Nov. 2, with first reads of proposed fall 2027 attendance zones for more than a dozen west and southwest Atlanta schools, including Douglass and Washington high schools, along with the board's draft 2027 legislative priorities. Its consent agenda included temporary construction easements for the city and a school bus purchase. Minutes aren't posted yet.
