Atlanta City Council

The council's committees had a packed week. The Finance/Executive Committee approved a resolution authorizing the mayor to sign agreements with MARTA and other partners if Atlanta is selected to host the 2028 Democratic National Convention, passing 5-0 with one abstention. A $5.98 million cloud services contract extension with Deloitte and a $466,613 emergency dispatch contract both cleared the committee unanimously, while the Plaza Theatre received a $12,000 refund for alcohol license fees it had overpaid over three years. On the utilities side, the City Utilities Committee approved a $15.5 million upgrade for the Flint River Pump Station and a pair of major mechanical repair contracts totaling $36 million, though a $2 million stream restoration project at Chastain Park was deferred to August. The Zoning Committee sent a rezoning application for properties on Ponce de Leon Avenue to the full council for a first reading, a proposal that would convert a mixed-use site to higher-density residential and commercial use under the BeltLine overlay. Residents near Piedmont Park were also set to weigh in on a special event application for a two-day music and food festival scheduled for September, and the full council's proposed ordinance adjusting solid waste service fees and backyard trash collection exemptions was on the table for neighborhood comment. Atlanta Public Schools Board of Education

- I-85 Lighting Upgrade (Fulton County) Crews are replacing the aging high-pressure sodium lights along I-85 between I-75 and north of Lenox Road with LED fixtures. Poles and conduit may be replaced as part of the work.
- SR 13 Resurfacing (Fulton County) SR 13 is getting repaved between SR 9 and North Fork Peachtree Creek. The road hasn't been resurfaced since 2012, so this one is long overdue.
- Buford Spring Connector Tunnel Lighting (Fulton County) The tunnel at the Buford Spring Connector and I-85 is getting its lighting upgraded from HPS to LED. Conduit and wiring work may be part of the scope.
- SR 9 Resurfacing (Fulton County) SR 9 is being repaved from SR 3 north to Paces Ferry Road. This is a maintenance-driven project targeting a stretch with a low pavement condition score.
