Atlanta City Council committee holds the $68 million sale of the city detention center to Fulton County
The Finance Committee cited questions about funding, renovations and the city's 182 corrections employees. CFO Mohamed Balla said the city spends about $30 million a year on corrections and that negotiations with the county are still underway.
Atlanta Beltline secures the final land for its 22-mile loop
The effort took two decades and included nearly 200 closings, about 90 property purchases and 230 easements. The last piece was a $550,000, 0.2-acre parcel on English Street, and the full loop is scheduled for completion by 2030.
DeKalb Schools to consider making Norman Sauce III permanent superintendent
The board votes at its Oct. 5 meeting after naming him sole finalist 4-3 on Sept. 14. His interim contract expires in November.
Permit issued for the former Presidential Hotel tower redevelopment
DeKalb County approved a $53.3 million adaptive reuse near Spaghetti Junction. Aramar Investments plans to convert the 14-story structure into 282 residential units.
DeKalb sues over the Intrenchment Creek land swap
The county alleges two LLCs tied to Blackhall Studios' founder breached the 2021 exchange of about 40 park acres for roughly 53 adjacent acres. Blackhall agreed to make $1.5 million in improvements, according to County Attorney Terry Phillips.
Rep. Everton Blair Jr. named Honorary Grand Marshal for Atlanta Pride
Blair represents Georgia's 13th District and was sworn in Sept. 1 after an August runoff. The festival runs Oct. 10-11 in Piedmont Park.
Buckhead Village plan would replace a police precinct with 315 apartments
Middleburg Communities plans a six-story building at 3110 Maple Drive with about 7,100 square feet of retail. It would replace two buildings, including the one at 3120 Maple Drive that houses APD Zone 2.

Fulton County sets no millage rate at its Sept. 30 hearing
The eight-minute special meeting drew two speakers by Zoom and no vote on the 2026 General Fund rate. Commissioners voted 4-0 to pull the Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield contract renewal and the 2027 employee and retiree premium rates.
Atlanta Finance Committee advances a Gateway Center donation
Alongside the jail sale hold, the committee advanced a $325,000 donation to Gateway Center for homelessness services and a $438,005 weapons detection contract.
Atlanta Transportation Committee approves airport contracts
Items include a six-month, $4.9 million rental car center maintenance extension and $640,000 in parking deck design. The committee held three street abandonment proposals and the BeltLine bike lane legislation.
Atlanta Zoning Committee takes up self-storage permits and a zoning code rewrite
The agenda included a citywide special use permit requirement for new self-storage facilities and Councilmember Mary Norwood's rewrite of the zoning code. Outcomes aren't posted.
Atlanta Utilities and Community Development committees
Utilities considered an ordinance on sudden water bill spikes and a $17.5 million transfer for the North Fork storage tank and pump station. Community Development had $2.34 million for a 12.6-acre park, tougher tree rules and a $7.75 million federal lead hazard grant on its agenda.
Atlanta City Council meets Oct. 5
The 1 p.m. agenda includes self-storage permits, park land acquisitions, mixed-use rezonings and public pool admission fees. The Committee on Council meets at 11:30 a.m.
DeKalb commissioners' Sept. 29 agenda
It included data center definitions and oversight, a $3.2 million design contract for 2.1 miles of Flat Shoals Parkway sidewalks and a 10-year water and sewer capital plan. Minutes aren't posted. The Committee of the Whole meets Oct. 6 at 5:30 p.m.
Brookhaven takes up grandfathered-building rules and a Greenway contract transfer
The agenda included a public hearing on nonconforming structure rules and a transfer of Peachtree Creek Greenway work from Heath & Lineback to Parsons Transportation Group. At the work session, the city reported 27 public EV stations and a potential 28% Cigna premium increase.
Decatur commission approves park and school officer items
Approvals include a $197,000 Trees Atlanta contract for Legacy Park restoration and two change orders totaling more than $92,000 for the Decatur Square project. The commission also updated the school resource officer agreement to address student privacy under FERPA.
ESPLOST VII is on the Nov. 3 ballot
It's expected to collect more than $925 million across three districts by 2032, with DeKalb schools estimating about $825 million. Projects include 14 roof replacements, 20 HVAC replacements and the $175 million Druid Hills High School modernization.
DeKalb schools release redistricting options
Estimated student shifts are 1,619 under Option 1, 2,057 under Option 2 and 3,184 under Option 3. The board is expected to vote on a plan by the end of the year.
NPU-M reviewed a Beltline-area rezoning
The Sept. 28 agenda covered rezoning light industrial land for a high-density apartment and retail project, including 460 Decatur St SE. NPU votes are recommendations to the city.
Permits, construction, and road work
Midtown and Downtown: Overnight lane closures begin Oct. 5 on 10th Street NE for emergency sewer repairs. Spring Street's bicycle and pedestrian project between Peachtree and 17th streets is nearing completion. A 353-square-foot open-air pavilion is permitted at 1589 Peachtree St NE. Grady's Phase 5 lab renovation at 80 Jesse Hill Jr Dr SE awaits review. I-75 tunnel lighting work continues at Ralph McGill Boulevard and Baker Street.
Virginia-Highland, Morningside and Druid Hills: Clifton Road NE closes 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 5 and 6 for tree removal. A new 1600-amp electrical service is permitted at 195 Ottley Dr NE, and a clinic-style build-out is underway at 400 Plaster Ave NE. Fire sprinklers closed out at two new Lulah Ave retail buildings, and LaVista Road signal upgrades continue.
Old Fourth Ward, Inman Park and Memorial Drive: Four Level 2 EV chargers are planned at 477 Wilmer St NE. Pedestrian beacons are going in along SR 260 and SR 42. A yoga studio at 1454 La France St NE is converting to a photo studio. Ralph McGill Boulevard potholes lead service requests, with five reports at Central Park Place.
Buckhead: Two permits at 1968 Peachtree Rd NW would create a 10-bed unit on the sixth floor. I-75 lighting work is underway, and pothole and signal reports cluster around Peachtree Battle Avenue and Peachtree Road.
West Midtown and Collier Hills: A new three-story duplex is in review at 1205 Atlantic Dr NW. Land development and alteration filings landed at 739 Trabert Ave NW, and four EV chargers are in review at 1000 Marietta St NW. SR 3 intersection improvements are underway near 14th Street and Hemphill Avenue.
Southwest Beltline: Three filings at 918 Dill Ave SW cover two affordable housing floors, office suites and a small grocery. Pool projects are filed at 950 Garibaldi St SW and 840 Woodrow St SW. SR 14 bridge work at the Westside Trail is underway.
Brookhaven, Chamblee and Decatur: Life safety reviews closed Oct. 2 for five Silverton townhouses on Manifest Drive. Peachtree Industrial Boulevard signal work is underway. At 2701 N Decatur Rd, a $6 million low-voltage cabling permit and a $1.47 million cable permit for the hospital expansion closed.
