Atlanta Public Schools Board of Education

NPU-D's meeting this past week had three big items on the table. Neighbors were set to weigh in on a resolution opposing a property tax break for a development along Ellsworth Industrial Drive, the kind of pushback that typically surfaces when residents think a developer doesn't need public help to build in an already hot market. A second resolution takes up a citywide ordinance that would adjust solid waste fees and rework who qualifies for free backyard trash collection, a change that could affect your monthly bill and who gets exemptions. A third item, a citywide zoning change backed by two councilmembers, would require medical cannabis dispensaries to get a special use permit before opening, meaning neighbors would get a formal say before one moves in nearby rather than having it open by right. Propel ATL was also on the agenda to walk through its "Where's My Project?" campaign tracking transportation and safety upgrades across the area.

Permits

- 101 Defoors Landing NW — Major tree damage restoration permit covers bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, roof, chimney, and gutters at this multi-family property, plus electrical, plumbing, and mechanical work. Expect an extended construction timeline given the scope.
- Marietta St NW — Permit issued for three commercial hoods with grease duct and a dishwasher hood hookup. That's a strong signal a new restaurant or food service tenant is moving into the space.
- 1175 Chattahoochee Ave NW — Interior build-out planned for a white box space inside the Complex development on Ellsworth Industrial. Another tenant is prepping to open here.
- 907 Marietta St NW — Electrical permit pending for a 50KW diesel generator install. Commercial backup power on this scale usually means a larger operation moving in or upgrading.
- 679 11th St NW — Telecom work permitted to modify antenna mounts and add four antennas to an existing twelve, along with new radio equipment. Standard infrastructure upgrade, but crews will be on site.
- 35 Collier Rd NW — Fire sprinkler system additions and relocations filed to meet current fire code. Routine life-safety upgrade.
- 1192 Foster St NW — CO detection system added at the Howard School. A safety upgrade, not a disruption.
- 2195 Defoor Hills Rd NW — General electrical renovation underway, including new lighting, switches, and receptacles for an existing commercial space.
- 1375 Seaboard Industrial Blvd NW — An eight-foot chain link privacy fence with slats and two new sliding gates is going up around the site. Expect fencing crews and equipment staging nearby.

Beyond these, 19 more commercial permits came through for routine alterations, plumbing, and electrical work, none with major dollar figures attached. On the residential side, 37 permits landed this week, with tree removal for dead or hazardous trees leading the pack at 10 permits, followed by HVAC and electrical work. Nothing there should disrupt your street beyond the usual truck and crew traffic.

Road Work

Under Construction
- SR 3/US 41 Intersection Improvements (Fulton County) — Crews are reworking the intersection cluster at Northside Drive, 14th Street, and Hemphill Avenue to simplify signal timing and traffic flow.
- I-75 Lighting Upgrade, Musket Ridge Drive to I-85 (Fulton County) — GDOT is swapping out old HPS lighting for LED fixtures along this corridor, with pole and conduit replacement possible.
- SR 9 Resurfacing, SR 3 to North of Paces Ferry Road (Fulton County) — Crews are repaving this stretch of SR 9 to fix a low pavement quality score. Expect standard resurfacing impacts like lane closures and uneven surfaces until it wraps up.
- Bridge Preservation at 7 Locations (Cobb, DeKalb, and Fulton Counties) — This multi-county project covers bridge deck overlays, steel beam painting, and joint replacement at several sites, including bridges over Moreland Avenue and SR 280.

- 24-Hour Lane Closure on Northside Drive NW for Storm Drainage Repairs and Paving — Crews closed a lane on Northside Drive NW near 3111 Northside Drive NW from 9-4 starting Jul 31 for storm drainage repairs and paving. Expect slower traffic through the corridor while work continues.
- Emergency Road Closure at Rockingham Dr. NW and Mornington Dr. NW Due to Sewer Mainline Work — Crews are working on the intersection for emergency sewer mainline repairs starting today and running for a few weeks. If you're in the area, plan for detours around this intersection until the work wraps up.

Service Requests

Potholes top the list this week, with 8 reports clustered on Sunbury Place, Spring Valley Road, and around Brady Avenue at Howell Mill, plus 10th Street at Curran and Marietta Road. All are in progress.

Traffic signals need attention too. You'll find 7 non-emergency repair requests at Williams Street and 15th, Techwood Drive and 5th, Northside Drive at Collier Road, and Marietta Boulevard at Coronet Way. Two more urgent signal issues came in at Northside Drive and Mount Paran, and at Moores Mill and Bolton Road, one of which has already closed out.

Overgrowth is blocking sightlines at several intersections, including Echota Drive at both Greystone Road and Northside Drive, Collier Road at Seaboard Industrial, Marietta Road, and Deering Road. Crews have already resolved two of these five reports.

Rounding out the list: a downed tree on Upton Road is still awaiting cleanup, and litter removal on Mecaslin Street got marked as resolved.
